Abstract

At the heart of the problematic of colonialism lies a deceptively simply question: why did the colonized put up with their subjection? I say deceptively simple because, while there is an obvious answer on which practically all researchers are agreed—that is, European ‘power’—its nature, sources, and mode of implementation have always been hotly debated.
