The occurrence of palygorskite in Quaternary sediments of the coastal plain of north-west Egypt

Abstract

Sediments from a Quaternary beach ridge complex along the coastal plain of north-west Egypt have been examined by X-ray diffraction and optical and scanning electron microscopy. Palygorskite was identified in the caliche capping the beach ridges and in the gypsiferous marls between the ridges; petrographic evidence indicated that this had formed authigenically in both environments. Examples are thus provided of the pedogenic and evaporative in situ formation of palygorskite.

Les sédiments venant d'un complexe de bancs côtiers du quaternaire le long de la plaine côtière du Nord-Ouest de l'Egypte ont été examinés par diffraction de rayons X, microscopic optique et microscopie électronique à balayage. La palygorskite a été identifiée dans le caliche recouvrant les bancs et dans les marnes gypseuses entre les bancs. Des indications pétrographiques certaines montrent que cell-ci s'est formée localement dans les deux environnements. On a ainsi des exemples de formation in situ de palygorskite avec le sol environnant et par évaporation.

Es wurden Sedimente eines Komplexes von einem quaternären Strandwall entlang der Küstenebene von NW Ägypten mit röntgenographischen, optischen Methoden und mit Hilfe der Rasterelektronenmikroskopie untersucht. Palygorskit wurde in den zersetzten Kalksteinen (caliche) identifiziert, die die Strandwälle überdecken und in den gipsführenden Mergeln zwischen den Wällen. Petrographisch konnte nachgewiesen werden, daß dieser sich authigen in beiden Milieus gebildet hat. Es wurden so Beispiele von pedogenetisch und evaporitisch in situ gebildeten Palygorskit geliefert.

Se han examinado mediante técnicas de difracción de rayos X y microscopia óptica y electrónica los sedimentos de un complejo de cerros litorales cuaternarios de la planicie costera del noroeste de Egipto. Se ha identificado paligorsquita en el caliche que recubre los cerros playeros yen las margas yesiferas entre los cerros; la evidencia petrográfica indicó que se habia formado autigenamente en ambos medios. Se facilitan, pues, ejemplos de la formación pedogénica y evaporativa in situ de la paligorsquita.
