Abstract

Abstract

The fixation of toluene and its polymerization in the interlayer spaces of a Cu-montmorillonite during cycles including dehydration of the carrier, adsorption of the reagent and desorption of the excess substance, followed by rehydration of the carrier, were investigated. Various analytical methods (thermogravimetry, X-ray diffraction and IR absorption spectroscopy) were used. The results are analogous to those found for the montmorillonite-Cu(II)-benzene system. Toluene fixation thus involves two reactions, one corresponding to the uptake of one toluene molecule, and the other to the uptake of three toluene molecules per Cu2+ ion. Nevertheless, the affinity of toluene for montmorillonite exceeds that of benzene.
