Clay mineralogy of a sequence of andesitic tephra beds of western Taranaki, New Zealand

Abstract

The clay mineralogy of a sequence of 36 andesitic tephra and associated paleosols dating from 320 to > 100,000 years BP has been studied using XRD, IR, DTA and TEM techniques. The mineralogy and weathering sequence is compared with that of rhyolitic tephra of central North Island, New Zealand.

La minéralogie de l'argile d'une suite de 36 téphrites andésitiques et des paléosols associés datant de 320 à plus de 100 000 ans a été étudiée en utilisant les techniques de diffraction des rayons X, infrarouge, d'analyse thermique différentielle et de microscopie électronique à transmission. La minéralogie et la séquence de désagrégation sont compareées avec celles des téphrites rhyolitiques du centre de North Island, en Nouvelle Zélande.

Se compara la serie de mineralogía y meteorización con la de las tefras riolíticas del centro de la Isla del Norte de Nueva Zelandia.
