page 13 note 1 Bailey adds the consideration that in Aen. viii. 416 the adjective Aeolia is ‘applied to Lipare as one of the Aeolian islands, but may well have been used also of the south-western coast of Italy, as it would be if the reading Lipare were adopted’. But the reading Lipare is clearly false.
page 14 note 1 Conington here refers to our passage of Lucretius and notes that Virgil makes another spear fly aera per lenerum (ix. 699), using a Lucretian phrase from this same context (146).
