1 I must however demur to the citation of Ep. 33 1 as an instance of ‘suppressed only.’ I suggested there the change of quae to aliqua (so that eminent, notabilia sunt should be simply parallel verbs, with asyndeton), because ‘be sure there is unevenness when what is prominent is remarkable’ reminded me of the nonsense sentence inter sepulchra monumenta sunt with which Porcius Latro lured his class to ill-considered applause, and the insertion of ‘only’ before ‘what is prominent’ seems to me to make matters a little worse.
