^{page 90 note 1} The words appear to distinguish between the putting in order (κατασκενάσασθαι not ἐπισκευάζειν ‘repair,’ nor yet on the other hand οἰκοδομεῖν) of the ‘sanctuary’ (νεών) and the rebuilding of the ‘precincts’ (τοῦ περιβόλου elsewhere called ἱρόν): but the distinction does not seem to be observed through the whole of the narrative. The words δἰ αὐτοῦ perhaps suggest that the king (who was then inclined εἰς εὐσέβειαν (see preceding sentence) regarded himself as the divine instrument in this vast enterprise.

^{page 90 note 2} Some explain this discrepancy by dating the ‘fifteenth’ year, not from the time when Herod received the crown from the senate, but from the time when he slew Antigonus and captured Jerusalem.

^{page 92 note 1} But Josephus leaves a loop-hole for believing that both the altar and the foundations had been begun before : for he uses κατασκευάζειν as to the former, and ἀγείρειν as to the latter.
