page 34 note 1 Material in Headlam ad loc.; Hippon. 71 Diehl ὀδόντες ἐν τῆισι γνάθοισι κεκινέατσι does not mean ‘claquer les dents’ (Masson, Cunningham): ἐν τῆισο γνάθοισι shows that κεκινέαται refers to teeth loosened (by old age, or pyorrhea) in their alveoli, as recognized by Headlam (on Her. 3. 49; on κινεῖσθαι in this medical sense cf. Thes., s.v. κινέω, 1569 A de ossibus, quae paullatim suis sedibus excidunt, and Aret. 1. 9. 2).
