page 246 note 1 The fact that Miss Yonge, telling the story of the martyrdom of Polycarp, in her Pupils of St. John, says that his death took place at 2 P.M. may be taken as showing that this hour is not inconsistent with the rest of the narrative.

page 247 note 1 It puts the meaning beyond doubt when we read that (after his studies) he used to attend Vespasian before daybreak.
