1 I have allowed what I wrote to stand, but Mrs L. G. Mitchell points out to me that the British exported ridings to their colonies – though at any rate in Australia etymology has been forgotten and not all ridings are thirdings.
2 When I was on the point of sending this review to the Editors, I saw S. V. Tracy, CP (1991), 201–4, arguing that for the period 229–86 B.C. there is reason to think that the rule Stockton and Forrest did not apply, and that before 229 there is no reason to think that it did apply.
