page 85 note 1 Baumeister (Denkmäler, p. 797) thinks that the objects held by Euthymos are not torches but ; he is not lighting the pyre but consecrating it with holy water. From the peculiar form of the supposed torches and the fact that the pyre is already burning freely in all directions the explanation seems probable and of course helps out the festal solemnity of the scene.
