1. Nee cites Mao's contention, “Communes are too weak when it comes to suppressing counterrevolution” (p. 358). But my edition of Mao's works (Wan-sui, 1969; p. 672), the Joint Publication Research Services translation (61,269–2: 455) sees this as a comment on the softness of the Shanghai's People's Commune's Public Security forces specifically in not holding people they arrest and not as a general comment on the Paris Commune form of government as Nee (and the Schram translation he relies on) has it.
