Chemical dependency in the elderly has been identified by practitioners as a serious and growing problem. This article reports on the Elders Health Program, a research and demonstration project aimed at the problem of providing appropriate services for the chemically dependent senior. It describes the development of the screening process and presents the screening tools used as part of the identification strategy. In addition, it presents the results of the epidemiological data gathered using these screening tools. Finally, the article discusses the implications of the identification strategy for intervention, treatment, and further research as identified by the project research team.

Un exercice de repérage de signaux discontinus a été employé pour évaluer le processus de planification du mouvement (relié aux paramètres de direction et d'amplitude) comme source du ralentissement de l'initiation et de la production du mouvement chez les personnes âgées. Les personnes âgées ont démontré des temps de réaction et de mouvement plus lents, cette lenteur variant en fonction de la quantité d'informations traitées pour accomplir le mouvement. Cependant, les personnes âgées ont semblé aussi capables que des individus plus jeunes de corriger des erreurs imprévues de mouvement. Les données suggèrent que, bien que le processus de sélection du mouvement puisse constituer un facteur qui contribue au ralentissement chez les personnes âgées, l'identification de paramètres spécifiques du mouvement peut s'avérer plus importante dans l'accomplissement de certains mouvements que les quelques déficits généralisés associés au vieillissement.

Psychometric properties of the Beck Depression Inventory are questionable for elderly francophones. Consequently, the aim of this study is to assess the reliability and the validity of the French version of the BDI (Questionnaire de Dépression de Beck: Bourque & Beaudette, 1982) for this group. Six hundred and forty-three French-speaking elders from Quebec and New-Brunswick answered the BDI. The reliability coefficients showed satisfactory internal consistency (.85), split-half reliability (.76) and test-retest correlation (.74). A principal-components analysis yielded three factors (somatic complaints, negative view of the self, and helplessness) accounting for 46.9 per cent of the total variance. The choice of an optimal cut-off score and the use of the BDI with the elderly are also discussed in this study.

De nombreuses recherches concluent que les aidants naturels de personnes âgées en perte d'autonomie éprouvent un fardeau associé à leur situation. Les principaux facteurs influençant ce fardeau sont ici passés en revue et regroupés en quatre catégories: variables liées aux tâches effectuées par l'aidant, caractéristiques de la personne âgée, caractéristiques de l'aidant et variables interactionnelles caractérisant la relation entre l'aidant et l'aidé. L'article présente les résultats d'une recherche conduite auprès d'un échantillon représentatif des aidants québécois de personnes âgées en perte d'autonomie (n = 294). Selon cette analyse, le degré d'assistance fournie, l'aide pour les activités de la vie quotidienne et l'interaction avec les professionnels du réseau de soins formel sont associés au fardeau ressenti. De plus, le degré d'autonomie et l'état de santé de la personne aidée, de même que l'âge de l'aidant influencent le fardeau. Les variables interactionnelles influençant le fardeau sont: la proximité du lien de parenté entre l'aidant et l'aidé, le degré de responsabilité assumée par l'aidant, la cohabitation, ainsi que l'assistance fournie par les autres membres du réseau personnel. Ces résultats appuient plusieurs conclusions des travaux antérieurs, suggérant ainsi que les principaux facteurs associés au fardeau pourraient être similaires, peu importe le pattern ou le contexte de la situation aidant/aidé au plan de la culture (l'échantillon est québécois), du statut de l'aidant (principal ou secondaire) et du degré ou du type d'incapacité de l'aidé. Les résultats de cette recherche sont finalement discutés dans la perspective des tendances sociales à venir et des implications concrètes qu'ils soulèvent pour la planification des services sociaux et de santé.

This is a descriptive retrospective study of geriatric medical consultation to a psychogeriatric unit in a general teaching hospital over a two-year period. Ninety-eight discharges were studied to assess patient demographics, medications and discharge status. 39.8 per cent of patients on the unit were seen in consultation by geriatric medicine. Males were more likely to require consultation. Length of stay was longer for those seen in consultation. Primary affective disorder was the most common psychiatric diagnosis in the patients studied. Management of pre-existing neurologic and cardiac disease were the predominant reasons for consultation. The supportive environment of this medical liaison model on a psychogeriatric unit provides an excellent teaching environment for both geriatric medical and psychiatric trainees.

Small scale evaluations are discussed and a case is presented where the impact of a neighbourhood senior citizens' health promotion centre on its clients and community cannot be assessed through large scale, rigorous, evaluation approaches. In addition to the inherent difficulties of finding measurable substitutes for health, the small scale of the program was unlikely to produce a measurable impact on them and the high cost entailed relative to the resources invested in the program was unwarranted. Emphasizing the quantity and quality of services provided, the evaluation found that the centre, which was planned, organized and controlled by a community association, provided a wide range of quality, accessible disease prevention and health promotion services to seniors in a neighbourhood setting. Two high risk groups were emphasized, the frail elderly and Native Indian elderly.

The Canadian Home Economics Journal publishes scholarly articles as well as others of general interest whose contents relate to the philosophy and practice of Home Economics. A quarterly journal, each issue focusses on a theme related to the improvement of the quality of life of individuals and families, the mission of the Home Economics profession. This particular issue of the Journal centres around the theme of Aging in Canada and features four articles of general interest and three research articles. The articles of general interest focus on different topics related to aging: governmental literature pertaining to aging; clothing preferences and consumer behaviour of older citizens; housing needs of the elderly, and Canada's aging population. The research articles cover diverse areas such as demographic characteristics of the elderly, the nutritional needs and health of older people, and factors that influence learning among seniors. The contents of the articles cover reflection generating issues about social aging. This special issue of the Journal will be of particular interest and value to the practitioner working with the elderly as well as providing background information for class discussion in university courses related to aging.
