Laura Ford (University of Manitoba): “Lexical variation of expressions for ‘died’ in Winnipeg obituaries: a diachronic analysis”
Laura Ford a présenté une analyse diachronique de l'utilisation de la langue dans les nécrologies de Winnipeg. En se fondant sur des nécrologies publiées dans le Winnipeg Free Press au cours d'une période de 100 ans (1922–2022), Laura a montré que la façon dont les journalistes de Winnipeg parlent de la mort a changé sous l'effet d’évolutions sociales sous-jacentes. Laura a approfondi ce projet apparemment limité avec beaucoup de perspicacité. Laura Ford's talk presented a diachronic analysis of language use in Winnipeg obituaries. Based on obituaries published in the Winnipeg Free Press over the course of 100 years (1922–2022), Laura showed that the way Winnipeg writers refer to dying has changed as a result of underlying societal changes. Laura brought depth and many insights into a seemingly small project. Attendees were impressed by her ability to combine different subfields and to convey information about her methodology and results with clarity. It was clear from the question period that she had engaged the whole audience.
Liam McFadden (University of Toronto, Mississauga): “Language mapping for linguists”
L'affiche de Liam McFadden (coécrite avec Avery Ozburn et Samule Akinbo) présentait un projet appliquant la cartographie linguistique à différentes communautés linguistiques à l'intérieur et au-delà de frontières nationales, et soulignait l'importance des cartes linguistiques autant pour les communautés linguistiques que pour la recherche linguistique. Les participants ont salué les réponses réfléchies de Liam aux questions. Son style de présentation était engageant et l'affiche était bien conçue et visuellement attrayante.

Liam McFadden's poster (co-authored with Avery Ozburn and Samuel Akinbo) showcased a language mapping project as applied to different language communities within and across national boundaries, and underscored the significance of language maps for both language communities and linguistics research. Attendees praised Liam's thoughtful responses to questions. His presentation style was engaging and the poster was well designed and visually attractive.
