Abstract

Postverbal durative expressions in Mandarin Chinese have been treated in four different ways in the literature: as complements, as predicates, as both complements and predicates, and as adjuncts. In this article, we propose a combination of the adjunct and predicate analyses, taking into account both syntactic and semantic properties not only of the postverbal durative expression, but also of the verbs and the objects to which the duratives can attach. Our objective is to show that these factors together give rise to an account of the surface distribution and the syntactic position of the postverbal durative expression in Mandarin Chinese.
