Among other questions it asks: “In which of the following countries have you direct investments, i.e. branch establishments, subsidiary companies, or separate companies in which you have an interest, as distinguished from ‘portfolio’ holdings of foreign securities” (p. 81). It is not certain that those answering this question will interpret the term “direct investment” in the same way as do, for example, the United States Department of Commerce in the publications of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, and, allowing for small differences, the Dominion Bureau of Statistics.
