TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTION OF CRANE FLIES (DIPTERA: TIPULIDAE) IN A SOUTHERN NEW YORK WOODLAND

Abstract

Adult tipulids were collected at weekly intervals in a southern New York open woodland. Sweeping, light trapping, and Malaise trapping yielded 4003 crane flies representing 125 species. The 25 most common species were identified and enumerated. The Malaise trap data were used to examine phenology, diversity, and species evenness. Further numerical analysis with the Malaise trap data indicated similarity among collecting periods. These results were used to outline the seasonal subcommunities that existed over a 2-year period.

Résumé

Des tipulides adultes ont été collectionnés à intervalles d'une semaine dans un boisé ouvert du sud de l'état de New York. Au moyen du filet fauchoir, du piège lumineux et du piège Malaise, on a capturé 4003 tipules appartenant à 125 espèces. Les 25 espèces les plus abondantes sont identifiées et listées. Les données obtenues avec le piège Malaise ont été utilisées pour étudier la phénologie, la diversité et l'homogénéité des espèces. L'analyse numérique plus approfondie des données du piège Malaise a révélé une similarité entre les périodes de collection. Ces résultats ont permis de décrire les sous-communautés présentes au cours d'une période de deux ans.
