SEASONAL FLIGHT ACTIVITY OF THE SMALLER EUROPEAN ELM BARK BEETLE, SCOLYTUS MULTISTRIATUS (COLEOPTERA: SCOLYTIDAE), AND ASSOCIATES IN GEORGIA1

Abstract

The smaller European elm bark beetle, Scolytus multistriatus (Marsham), had three distinct periods of adult flight annually in Georgia. Adults of the associated native elm bark beetle, Hylurgopinus rufipes Eichhoff, were trapped on elm logs during only one period in the spring, but some adults were reared from infested bolts in the fall. Seasonal abundance of the S. multistriatus parasite Spathius benefactor Matthews (Braconidae) showed little temporal relationship to its host. However, Entedon leucogramma Ratzeburg (Eulophidae) emergence was highly synchronized with S. multistriatus emergence. Scolytus multistriatus overwintered as fully developed larvae as in other parts of its range.

Résumé

Le petit scolyte européen de l'orme, Scolytus multistriatus (Marsham), a montré trois périodes distinctes de vol des adultes en Georgie. Les adultes de l'espèce indigène qui lui est associée, Hylurgopinus rufipes Eichhoff, ont été piégés sur des billes d'orme au cours d'une seule période au printemps, bien que quelques adultes aient été obtenus de billes infestées en automne. L'abondance saisonnière du parasitoïde de S. multistriatus, Spathius benefactor Matthews (Braconidae) a montré peu de relation temporelle avec celle de son hôte. Cependant, l'émergence de Entedon leucogramma Ratzeburg (Eulophidae) était étroitement synchronisée avec l'émergence de S. multistriatus. S. multistriatus hiverne à l'état de larve mature tout comme ailleurs dans son aire de distribution.
