A REVIEW OF THE DISSOCHAETUS (COLEOPTERA: LEIODIDAE: CHOLEVINAE) OF THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA

Abstract

Descriptions, a key to species, and distribution maps are presented for the three species of Dissochaetus Reitter 1884 known from America north of Mexico. A lectotype is designated for Dissochaetus oblitus LeConte, which occurs in the eastern deciduous forest biome of the eastern United States and southern Ontario. Dissochaetus arizonensis Hatch occurs in mountain forests from Arizona, New Mexico, and west Texas north to Wyoming. Dissochaetus mexicanus Jeannel is reported for the first time in the United States from montane forests in Big Bend, Texas. All are carrion scavengers. Each species represents a separate northwards colonization from Neotropical ancestors.

Résumé

Nous décrivons, présentons un tableau de détermination, et illustrons la répartition de trois espèces de Dissochaetus Reitter 1884 connues en Amérique, au nord du Mexique. Un lectotype est désigné pour Dissochaetus oblitus LeConte. Dissochaetus oblitus se rencontre dans le biome forestier de l’est des États Unis et du sud de l’Ontario. Dissochaetus arizonensis Hatch se retrouve dans les forêts des régions montagneuses de l’Arizona, du Nouveau Mexique et de l’ouest du Texas jusqu’au Wyoming, dans la nord. Dissochaetus mexicanus Jeannel est une nouvelle mention aux États Unis dans les forêts montagneuses de Big Bend au Texas. Toutes les espèces se nourrissent de charogne. Chaque espèce représente une invasion indépendante vers le nord à partir d’ancêtres néotropicaux.
