REDESCRIPTION OF AND HOST-INDUCED ANTENNAL VARIATION IN ANAPHES IOLE GIRAULT (HYMENOPTERA: MYMARIDAE), AN EGG PARASITE OF MIRIDAE (HEMIPTERA) IN NORTH AMERICA

Abstract

Anaphes iole Girault is redescribed from specimens reared from Lygus hesperus Knight and Pseudatomoscelis seriatus (Reuter). Anaphes anomocerus, A. ovijentatus, and A. perdubius are synonyms of A. iole. Host-induced morphological variation is discussed. The main attributes that vary with host are the relative size of certain funicular articles and their complement of sensory ridges. There is no morphological overlap between populations as indicated by measurements of most other structures. However, certain structural features that can be used to define the species unequivocally were found.

Résumé

Anaphes iole Girault est redécrit de spécimens élevés de Lygus hesperus Knight et Pseudatomoscelis seriatus (Reuter). Anaphes anomocerus, A. ovijentatus, et A. perdubius sont synonymes de A. iole. La variation morphologique occasionnée par l’hôte est décrite. Les attributs principaux qui varient selon l’hôte sont la grandeur relative de certains articles du funicule et leur complément de crêtes sensorielles. Il n’y a pas de recouvrement morphologique entre les populations comme indiquent les mesures d’autres traits structuraux. Néanmoins, certains traits structuraux ont été trouvés qui pourraient servir à distinguer cette espèce sans équivoque.
