PARASITOIDS EMERGING FROM PUPARIA OF RHAGOLETIS POMONELLA (DIPTERA: TEPHRITIDAE) INFESTING HAWTHORN AND APPLE IN CONNECTICUT

Abstract

Biosteres melleus (Gahan), Diachasma alloeum (Muesebeck), D. ferrugineum (Gahan), Opius canaliculatus Gahan, O. downesi Gahan (all Braconidae), and an undescribed Psilus sp. (Diapriidae) emerged from puparia of Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) collected in Connecticut during 1977 and 1978. Percentage parasitism ranged from 7.9 to 36.8% in flies on hawthorn and from 0.0 to 23.9% in flies on apple. It exceeded 5.0% in only 5 (22.7%) of 22 samples from apple. Higher rates of parasitism usually occurred at sites where other hosts of apple maggot parasitoids probably infested fruits on nearby plants.

Résumé

Biosteres melleus (Gahan), Diachasma alloeum (Muesebeck), D. ferrugineum (Gahan), Opius canaliculatus Gahan, O. downesi Gahan (tous des Braconidae), et une espèce non décrite, Psilus sp. (Diapriidae), sont émergés de puparia de Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) collectionnés au Connecticut en 1977 et 1978. Le pourcentage de parasitisme a varié de 7.9 à 36.8% sur l’aubépine, et de 0.0 à 23.9% sur le pommier. Il a dépassé 5.0% dans seulement 5 (22.7%) des 22 échantillons sur le pommier. Des taux plus élevés de parasitisme ont habituellement été observés aux sites où d’autres hôtes des parasitoïdes de la mouche de la pomme infestaient probablement les fruits sur les plantes avoisinantes.
