NEW SPECIES AND DIAGNOSTIC CHARACTERS FROM THE NEARCTIC LEAFHOPPER GENERA COMMELLUS AND EXTRUSANUS (RHYNCHOTA: HOMOPTERA: CICADELLIDAE)

Abstract

Four new species are described: Commellus cedilla from Alaska, Canada, and adjacent northeastern states; C. hyphen from the aspen parkland of Saskatchewan to North Dakota; C. semicolon from southern Montana; and Extrusanus oryssus widespread in northern prairies (Alberta to Kentucky). Alary polymorphism in both genera is discussed. Species-specific characters from enclosed male genitalic structures are described and illustrated in detail for the first time, for all species except C. hyphen. Keys are presented to the species of both genera.

Résumé

On trouvera ici la description de quatre nouvelles espèces de cicadelles : Commellus cedilla, de l’Alaska, du Canada et des états adjacents du nord-est américain; C. hyphen de la forêt de trembles de la Saskatchewan et du Dakota du Nord; C. semicolon, du sud du Montana; et Extrusanus oryssus, espèce répandue dans les prairies du nord (de l’Alberta au Kentucky). Le polymorphisme des ailes est examiné chez les deux genres. Les caractéristiques spécifiques reliées aux structures génitales internes des mâles de toutes les espèces à l’exception de C. hyphen sont décrites et illustrées en détail pour la première fois et des clés permettront d’identifier les espèces des deux genres.
