MODIFICATIONS IN THE CALLING BEHAVIOUR OF PSEUDALETIA VNIPUNCTA (LEPIDOPTERA: NOCTUIDAE), INDUCED BY TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS DURING PUPAL AND ADULT DEVELOPMENT1

Abstract

The age at which Pseudaletia unipuncta females initiated calling varied with temperatures experienced during pupal and adult stages. Entrainment was induced by temperatures during pupal development if similar to or lower than temperatures during adult life. However, adult temperatures were of major importance if lower than those experienced during pupal development. These observations were generally supported by data from field experiments repeated at different periods of the summer. The possibility that entrainment occurs at a specific period of development is proposed to explain certain field observations.

Changes in mean onset time of calling and the time spent calling also varied, although generally not in the same manner as reported for other species. Differences in the life cycles, particularly the site of pupation, are proposed to explain these discrepancies.

Résumé

L'âge auquel les femelles de la légionnaire uniponctuée, Pseudaletia unipuncta commencent l'appel varie selon les conditions de température pendant le développement pupal et la vie adulte. La température pendant le développement pupal est déterminante si elle est identique ou plus basse que celle au cours de la vie adulte. Cependant la température pendant la vie adulte est plus importante si elle est plus basse que celle prévalant durant le stade pupe. Les résultats des expériences sur le terrain confirment généralement les observations du laboratoire. La possibilité que l'effet de la température soit limité à une période spécifique au cours du développement est proposée afin d'expliquer certains des résultats obtenus sur le terrain.

Les changemenns dans l'heure du début de l'appel et le temps passé en appel varient aussi sous les conditions différentes de température, cependant nos résultats diffèrent par rapport à ceux obtenus chez d'autres espèces déjà étudiées. Nous croyons que ces divergences sont principalement liées aux différences existant entre les cycles vitaux de ces insectes, particulièrement en ce qui concerne leur site du pupaison.
