INSECT VECTORS OF THE YEAST NEMATOSPORA CORYLI IN MUSTARD, BRASSICA JUNCEA, CROPS IN SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN1

Abstract

Eighteen piercing and sucking insects were identified as feeders on green pods of mustard crops, Brassica juncea (L.) Coss. in Saskatchewan. Of these, the false chinch bug, Nysius ericae (Shilling), Lygus spp., and the western damsel bug, Nabis alternatus Parshley, were found to carry the yeast Nematospora coryli Peglion internally. N. ericae was capable of transmitting this organism to seeds in healthy green mustard plants.

Résumé

On a identifié 18 espèces d'insectes piqueurs et suceurs qui s'attaquent aux siliques vertes des cultures de moutarde, Brassica juncea (L.) Coss. en Saskatchewan. Parmi celles-ci, la fausse punaise fétide, Nysius ericae (Shilling), Lygus spp. et la nabidée de l'Ouest, Nabis alternatus Parshley, s'avèrent porteuses de la levure Nematospora coryli. N. ericae est capable de transmettre l'organisme à des graines déjeunes plants sains de moutarde.
