GENETIC INCOMPATIBILITY BETWEEN PIERIS CALLIDICE AND PIERIS OCCIDENTALIS NELSONI: DIFFERENTIATION WITHIN A PERIGLACIAL RELICT COMPLEX (LEPIDOPTERA: PIERIDAE)

Abstract

Pieris callidice from the French Alps was hybridized with the phenotypically similar P. occidentalis nelsoni from Fairbanks, Alaska in order to examine the degree of genetic divergence within a group of Pleistocene origin. Egg hatch for the cross nelsoni male × callidice female was zero. In the reciprocal cross, egg hatch was normal, but most of the larvae failed to feed on the normal host-plant of nelsoni, and died. The hybrid pupae and the single adult were intermediate between the parents. It is inferred that P. callidice and P. o. nelsoni are more divergent genetically and physiologically than phenotypically.

Résumé

On a hybridisé Pieris callidice des Hautes-Alpes (France) avec P. occidentalis nelsoni de Fairbanks (Alaska), qui est très semblable phénotypiquement, pour rechercher le degré de divergence génétique dans ce groupe de dérivation Pléistocène. Pour le croisement nelsoni mâle × callidice femelle il n’y avait point d’éclosion des oeufs; réciproquement, après une éclosion ordinaire, la plupart des larves a manqué de manger la plante-hôte de nelsoni et est mort. Les chrysalides et l’unique exemplaire de l’imago sont intermédiaires entre les espèces-parents. On conclut que P. callidice et P. o. nelsoni sont plus differenciés physiologiquement et génétiquement que phénotypiquement.
