The first record of Culiseta particeps (Diptera: Culicidae) in Canada

Abstract

Using a Center for Disease Control light trap Culiseta particeps (Adams) (Diptera: Culicidae) was collected on four occasions during the spring and summer of 2011. In addition, on 15 April 2011 a pupa was collected from a semi-permanent pool, reared to the adult stage and identified as C. particeps. The collection and identification of these mosquitoes marks the first time C. particeps has been reported in Canada. As there have been specimens identified in both the southwest coast of Alaska, United States of America and northwestern Washington State, United States of America, it is unsurprising that British Columbia, Canada is part of the natural habitat range of C. particeps.

Résumé

Nous avons récolté des Culiseta particeps (Adams) (Diptera: Culicidae) à quatre reprises au printemps et à l’été 2011 l'aide d'un piège lumineux de type Center for Disease Control. De plus, le 15 avril 2011, nous avons prélevé une nymphe dans un étang semi-permanent, l'avons élevée jusqu'au stade adulte et identifiée comme étant C. particeps. La récolte et l'identification de ces moustiques constituent les premières mentions de C. particeps au Canada. Puisqu'il y a eu des spécimens retrouvés à la fois sur la côte sud-ouest de l'Alaska, États-Unis, et dans le nord-ouest du Washington, États-Unis, il n'est pas étonnant que la Colombie-Britannique fasse partie de l'aire naturelle d'habitat de C. particeps.
