EVIDENCE FOR LIMITED DISPERSAL OF LARVAL GYPSY MOTH, LYMANTRIA DISPAR L. (LEPIDOPTERA: LYMANTRIIDAE)

Abstract

From 1985 through 1995, burlap flaps were stapled to 100 trees in a 10 by 10 grid in a 4-ha forest plot. Each year, the number of fourth- to six-instar larvae of gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar L., under each burlap flap was recorded at least weekly in June and into July. From 1987 through 1990,100 000–120 000 hatching gypsy moth larvae were released near the center of this plot in early May at the time of natural hatch. In the 4 years that releases occurred, there was a distinct, single cluster of large larvae under the burlap flaps near the center of the plot. This pattern did not occur in other years. Results are interpreted to mean that total dispersal of larvae from first to ultimate instar is limited, even though first instars are readily dispersed by wind.

Résumé

De 1985 à 1995, des morceaux de jute ont été brochés à 100 arbres, dans une grille échantillon de 10 par 10, dans une parcelle de terrain forestier de 4 ha. Chaque année, le nombre de larves de spongieuses, Lymantria dispar L., des stades 4 à 6 a été relevé au moins une fois par semaine en juin et juillet. De 1987 à 1990, 100 000–120 000 larves de spongieuses ont été relâchées au moment de leur éclosion près du centre de la parcelle de terrain, au début de mai, moment de l’éclosion en nature. Au cours des 4 années où des larves ont été relâchées, des grosses larves formant un seul paquet ont été retrouvées sous les couvertures de jute près du centre du terrain. Il ne s’est produit aucun phénomène de ce genre les autres années. Les résultats semblent indiquer que la dispersion totale des larves entre le premier et le dernier stade est très limitée, même si les larves de premier stade peuvent être dispersées par le vent.
