Abstract

Six carbamates, Niagara 10242, Niagara 10586, Niagara 10559, carbaryl, Baygon, and Bayer 44646, had negative temperature coefficients of toxicity to second instar nymphs of the migratory grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes (Fab.). The intensity of the negative temperature effect was inversely related to the basic toxicity of each compound. Piperonyl butoxide synergized all six compounds, but the amount of synergism was not related to basic toxicity. The results suggested that several carbamate detoxication mechanisms of varying importance for different carbamates occur in grasshoppers. Whereas all of these mechanisms appeared to be equally affected by post-treatment temperature, they were not all equally inhibited by piperonyl butoxide.
