EFFECTS OF SUB-LETHAL EXPOSURES TO MALATHION OR CHLORPYRIFOS-METHYL ON OFFSPRING PRODUCTION BY SOME STORED-PRODUCT BEETLES

Abstract

Exposure of adult rusty grain beetles, Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens), saw-toothed grain beetles, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), and red flour beetles, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), to filter papers treated with the organophosphorus insecticides malathion or chlorpyrifos-methyl often affected offspring production in survivors. Groups of five male and five female survivors were placed on ground wheat at 30°C and C. ferrugineus and O. surinamensis adults produced fewer offspring with prolonged exposure to chlorpyrifos-methyl; malathion had no effect. Tribolium castaneum adults produced significantly more offspring with increasing exposure to both malathion and chlorpyrifos-methyl indicating stimulation of oviposition or a selection for increased fitness in survivors.

Résumé

L’exposition des adultes du cucujide roux, Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens), du cucujide dentelé des grains, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), et du tribolium rouge de la farine, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) aux papiers filtres traités des insecticides organophosphoriques, malathion ou chlorpyrifos-méthylique, a souvent eu un effet sur la production de progéniture des survivants. Des groupes de cinq mâles et de cinq survivantes femelles ont été placés dans la farine du froment à 30°C. Les adultes de C. ferrugineus et d’O. surinamensis ont produit une progéniture décroissante à mesure que la durée de l’exposition au chlorpyrifos-méthylique a augmenté; l’exposition au malathion a été sans conséquence. Les adultes de T. castaneum ont produit une progéniture significativement plus grosse à mesure que les dosages de malathion et de chlorpyrifos-méthylique, tous les deux, s’en sont allés en augmentant, ce qui a signalé une stimulation de la ponte ou une sélection d’une meilleure forme des survivants.
