ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MANDIBLE AS A DIAGNOSTIC CHARACTER IN THE TAXONOMY OF PENICILLATE DIPLOPODS (DIPLOPODA: POLYXENIDAE)

Abstract

Mandibles of four species and three subspecies of penicillate diplopods inhabiting Japan, and two species from outside Japan, were studied to clarify their taxonomic significance. The mandibular structure showed distinct differences both between genera and between species, indicating its usefulness in the taxonomy of penicillate diplopods.

Résumé

Les mandibules de quatre espèces de diplopodes pénicillés du Japon et de deux autres espèces de l’extérieur du Japon ont été étudiées afin de mettre en évidence leur valeur taxonomique. La structure mandibulaire diffère de façon significative entre les genres et les espèces, indiquant leur utilité en taxonomie des diplopodes péncillés.
