ON THE DYNAMICS OF BLACKHEADED BUDWORM POPULATIONS1

Abstract

Based on a simple graphic analysis, I conclude that blackheaded budworm population density cycles are caused by delayed negative feedback processes, probably due to the numerical response of insect parasitoids. The parasitoid–host interaction, however, has a stable solution and continuous population density cycles can only be maintained in a variable environment.

Résumé

Sur la base d’une simple analyse graphique, je conclus que les fluctuations cycliques de la densité de population de la tordeuse à tête noire de l’épinette sont causées par des processus négatifs de régulation à retardement, résultant probablement de la réponse numérique des insectes parasitoïdes. L’interaction hôte–parasitoïdes a cependant une solution stable et le maintien des cycles de densité de population repose sur la variabilité environnementale.
