Natural history of Dictyla echii (Hemiptera: Tingidae) in Ontario and Québec, Canada

Abstract

The natural history and distribution of Dictyla echii (Schrank) (Hemiptera: Tingidae), a lace bug native to the Palaearctic, was investigated during 2014–2017 in southwestern Québec and southeastern Ontario, Canada. This apparently univoltine species is associated with Echium vulgare Linnaeus (Boraginaceae) and overwintered as adults in soil in a state of reproductive diapause. Eggs were almost entirely inserted in soft green stems and rarely in tissues of the upper leaf surface of the host plant. Adults and nymphs fed on rosettes, stems, and flower shoots, causing a chlorotic appearance of foliage, and stunted floral shoots. The external morphology of adults and immature stages are described and illustrated. Feeding, mating, oviposition, fecundity, incubation period, development of eggs in ovarioles, hatching of eggs, and emergence of first instars were studied and illustrated. The distribution of D. echii in North America and the Palaearctic is mapped.

Résumé

L’histoire naturelle et la distribution de Dictyla echii (Schrank) (Hemiptera: Tingidae), une punaise réticulée du paléarctique ont été étudiées pendant quatre saisons, 2014–2017, dans le sud-ouest du Québec et le sud-est de l’Ontario, Canada. Cette espèce apparemment univoltine associée à Echium vulgare Linnaeus (Boraginaceae), a hiverné au stade adulte dans le sol près des rosettes des plantes hôtes à l’état de diapause reproductrice. Les œufs étaient presque entièrement insérés dans la tige vert tendre et rarement dans les tissus de la surface supérieure des feuilles. Les adultes et les larves se nourrissent de rosettes, de tiges et de pousses de fleurs, provoquant une apparence chlorotique du feuillage et des pousses florales rabougries. La morphologie externe des adultes et des stades immatures, sont décrits et illustrés. L’alimentation, l’accouplement, la sélection des patrons de ponte, la fécondité, la période d’incubation, le développement des œufs dans les ovarioles, l’éclosion de l’œuf et l’émergence de la nymphe du premier stade ont été étudié et illustré. La distribution de D. echii dans les regions nord-est du Etats-Unis et paléarctiques ont étaient cartographies.
