IDENTIFICATION OF THREE SPECIES OF PROTEOTERAS (LEPIDOPTERA: TORTRICIDAE) ATTACKING SHOOTS OF MANITOBA MAPLE IN THE CANADIAN PRAIRIES

Abstract

Larvae of three species of Proteoteras (P. willingana (Kearfott), P. crescentana Kearfott, and P. aesculana Riley) attack shoots of Manitoba maple (Acer negundo L.) in the Canadian prairies. Larvae of P. willingana and P. crescentana have been confused because both cause gall formations on Manitoba maple and both lack the anal fork that is present in P. aesculana. This paper describes the ultimate larval instar and pupa of P. crescentana. Keys are presented to separate mature larvae, pupae, and adults of the three species.

Résumé

Dans les prairies canadiennes, les larves de trois espèces de Proteoteras (P. willingana (Kearfott), P. crescentana Kearfott et P. aesculana Riley) attaquent les pousses de l'érable négondo (Acer negundo L.). Etant donné que les larves de P. willingana et de P. crescentana produisent leurs galles sur le même hôte (l'érable négondo) et n'ont pas de fourche anale (présente chez les P. aesculana), elles ont été confondues. Nous décrivons le dernier stade larvaire et la pupe de P. crescentana, et présentons une table dichotomique des larves du dernier stade, des pupes et des adultes de ces trois espèces.
