HYPERPARASITISM IN POPULATIONS OF HYPHANTRIA CUNEA

Abstract

Four of the parasite species attacking Hyphantria cunea Drury spin their cocoons inside the colonial web of the host, where they are exposed to attack by five species of hyperparasites. Percentage hyperparasitism was measured over a 15-year period in permanent study areas in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The mean percentage was about 50%, with very wide variations from year to year. These variations were not related to the population density of H. cunea or its parasites and no model for hyperparasite-parasite interaction could be constructed.

Résumé

Quatre des espèces de parasites qui attaquent Hyphantria cunea Drury tissent leur cocon à l’intérieur de la tente de la colonie des hôtes; en ce lieu elles sont exposées aux attaques de cinq espèces d’hyperparasites. L’auteur mesura le pourcentage d’hyperparasitisme durant 15 ans dans des places d’étude permanentes au Nouveau-Brunswick et en Nouvelle-Ecosse. Le pourcentage moyen était d’environ 50% mais il variait beaucoup d’une année à l’autre. Ces variations n’étaient pas en relation avec la densité de population de H. cunea où ses parasites et de ce fait il fut impossible de construire un modèle d’interaction entre hyperparasites et parasites.
