HORSE FLIES AND DEER FLIES (DIPTERA: TABANIDAE) FEEDING ON CATTLE IN SOUTHWESTERN QUEBEC

Abstract
Four species of each of the genera Chrysops, Hybomitra, and Tabanus were collected while feeding on cattle in southwestern Quebec; T. quinquevittatus accounted for 75% of the tabanids. The more abundant species had a flight period of at least 5 weeks. Nearly 90% of the specimens were positive for fructose as determined by the cold anthrone test.
Résumé
Quatre espèces de chaque genre Chrysops, Hybomitra, et Tabanus furent récoltés se nourrissant sur des boeufs dans le sud-ouest du Québec; T. quinquevittatus représente 75% des captures de tabanides. Les espèces plus abondantes ont une période de vol d’au moins 5 semaines. Environ 90% des specimens ont reagit positivement au test d’anthrone détectant le fructose.
