EFFECT OF BODY WEIGHT ON LETHAL EFFECTIVENESS OF A JUVENILE HORMONE ANALOGUE APPLIED TO MALE AND FEMALE WESTERN SPRUCE BUDWORM (CHORISTONEURA OCCIDENTALS) (LEPIDOPTERA: TORTRICIDAE)

Abstract

Experiments were performed to determine the role of body weight in the response of last instar western spruce budworm, Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman, to a topically applied juvenile hormone analogue (JHA), Ro 13-5223 (Ethyl [2-(p-phenoxyphenoxy)ethyl] carbamate). The response of males in weight classes from 50 to 130 mg was not proportional to their body weight; susceptibility increased drastically in heavier larvae. The susceptibility of females increased in proportion to their body weight. The results of these experiments suggest that future investigations of JHA effectiveness in last instar Lepidoptera should consider both weight and sex as possible relevant variables. Age of the last instar may not, in itself, be an adequate measure by which to quantify JHA effects.

Résumé

Des expériences ont été effectuées afin de déterminer l'effet du poids corporel sur la réponse du dernier stade chez la tordeuse occidentale de l'épinette, Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman, à une application locale de l'analogue de l'hormone juvénile (JHA) Ro 13-5223 (Éthyle [2-(p-phénoxyphénoxy)éthyle] carbamate). La réponse des mâles des classes d'âge allant de 50 à 130 mg s'est avérée non proportionnelle à leur poids, la susceptibilité ayant augmenté de beaucoup chez les larves les plus grosses. Les résultats de ces expériences indiquent que les études sur l'efficacité des JHA chez les Lépidoptères au dernier stade devraient dorénavant considérer à la fois le poids et le sexe en tant que variables potentiellement pertinentes. L'âge durant le dernier stade n'est peut-être pas en soi une variable adéquate lorsqu'il s'agit de quantifier l'effet des JHA.
