CONTROL OF THE OAK-LEAF SHREDDER, CROESIA SEMIPURPURANA (KEARFOTT) (LEPIDOPTERA: TORTRICIDAE), BY AERIAL APPLICATION OF DIFLUBENZURON

Abstract

Unlike some tortricids that are refractory to diflubenzuron, the oak-leaf shredder, Croesia semipurpurana (Kearfott), is susceptible to this molt-inhibiting insect growth regulator. Aerial application of 140 g in 4.7 L/ha provides good control of this insect and affords foliage protection. The success of diflubenzuron was evaluated by sampling larvae and pupae. Monitoring male moths with pheromone traps provided corroborative evidence of a significant decrease in the post-treatment population. The successful assessment by pheromone monitoring here merits its consideration for other control operations in forestry.

Résumé

Contrairement à certains tortricidés qui sont réfractaires au diflubenzuron, la tordeuse printanière du chêne (Croesia semipurpurana Kearfott) est vulnérable à ce régulateur de croissance des insectes inhibant la mue. Un épandage aérien à la dose de 140 g dans 4,7 L/ha permet d'assurer une bonne répression de l'insecte et de protéger le feuillage. L'efficacité du diflubenzuron a été évaluée par échantillonnage des larves et des chrysalides. Le contrôle des papillons mâles au moyen de pièges à phéromones a fourni la preuve évidente d'une diminution significative de la population après le traitement. L'évaluation par contrôle des phéromones qui s'est avérée fructueuse dans ce cas-ci, mérite d'être prise en considération lors de futures opérations de contrôle en sylviculture.
