page 19 note 2 Will, de Claxton, 1326–44.

page 20 note 1 There is some difficulty in determining the date of this and the following letter. Thomas Henley was abbot of Westminster Sept., 1333—29 Oct., 1344 (Pearce, Monks of Westminster, p. 84) : together with the colleagues that he mentions, he presided over the chapter of 1340. Therefore the date of the letter seems to be c. 1340–3. On the other hand, an ordinance about the salary of the regent at Oxford, was passed in the chapter of 1343 (vol. II, p. 23, 56) not 1340. But the letter can hardly have been written after 1343 because (1) Henley had then ceased to be president, and (2) Thomas de Calton, prior of Shrewsbury, had been appointed as regent of the monks at Oxford, in 1343 (vol. II, p. 23). Perhaps the ordinance, passed in 1343, had been brought up in 1340, but not recorded in the acta. The letter may have been written before the chapter of 1340.

page 21 note 1 Unless there is a mistake in one of the dates, the prior of Norwich must have taken five months to answer the previous letter.

page 22 note 1 The chapter of 1343 met on 9 Sept.

page 23 note 1 for huiusmodi ?

page 24 note 2 The names of the two other presidents, York and Chester, and the absence of York, seem to fix the date as 1343, and the president who writes, as St. Albans : the abbot of St. Albans was then Michael de Mentmore, 1336–49, so that Thomas might be a mistake, natural enough, since this Formulary dates from the time of abbot Thomas de la Mare, 1349–96.

page 27 note 3 interlin.

page 28 note 1 This is a late copy (XV c.), from the Note-Book of John Lawerne, monk of Worcester. Both. Easton and Thomas de Brinton (monks of Norwich) were probably at Oxford, c. 1356–7, when they journeyed home to Norwich to preach (Norwich Communarius Rolls), and Easton went back to Oxford with his books, c. 1362–3 (Ibid.). In any case this letter must be before 1364, when Brinton was made proctor at the Curia (No. 211). As regards Adam Easton's career : c. 1365–6 he incepted (contribution, Norwich Camera Prioris Roll) ; 1366 prior studentium at Oxford (No. 218 below) ; 3 May, 1368, sent from Pope to Edward III (Cal. papal letters, IV, 27) ; 27 May, 1370, at Court of Rome (Foxe, Acts and Monuments, ed. Pratt, II, 935) ; perhaps succeeded Brinton as proctor in curia c. 1373 ; c. 1376 wrote No. 229, below; 1381, Cardinal; 1383, procured Bull (No. 233, cf. 241), and perhaps intervened in Tymworth-Bromfield case (Mem. of St. Edmunds (R.S.), III, 135); 1385 imprisoned and deprived ; 1389 reinstated ; ob. 1398.

page 30 note 1 proctor for the chapter, 14 Sept. ; cf. below, part IV, p. 201.

page 30 note 2 Perhaps a monk of St. Albans (cf. Simon Southereye) : his abbot would thus be one of the presidents. The statutes of 1363 (No. 157) dealt with the monk-students, perhaps owing to these suggestions.

page 101 note 1 From the Register of R. Bremesgrove, abbot of Evesham, 1418–35. Owing to the reference to the Bishop's visitation, it cannot be addressed to abbot Bremesgrove, who was exempt ; but it may well be from him : he was visitor of Chester, 1420–3, of Chertsey, 1423–6, of the diocese of Worcester, 1426–9. The opening phrase seems to imply that the visitor and the prelate addressed were at the University together : we know that abbot Bremesgrove was clericus et graduatus (above, II, 150).

page 105 note 2 Andovere received, on 3 July, 1441, letters testimonial from the University (Anstey, Epistolae Academicae, i, 199), probably on the completion of his necessary regency, which lasted from one to two years. The letter seems to be written on the eve of a Chapter : 1441 and 1444 would agree with the Bishop's movements, 1447 would not. A. H. Thompson, Visitations of Relig.
