* This elegant little poem was para-phrased in, or rather made the foundation of, an early French poem, entitled La Desputoison du Vin et de l'laue, which has been printed by M. Achille Jubinal (in his Nouveau Recueil des Contes, Dits, Fabliaux, &c. Paris, 1839, vol. i. p. 293.) from a MS. in the Bibl. du Roi, of the earlier part of the fourteenth century. Warton (H.E.P. i. cxxvi.) calls this poem, “a ridiculous piece of scurrility!”
