page 299 note * This poem was printed by M. Achille Jubinal, in his Nouveau Recueil de Contes, &c. vol. 1, 8vo. 1839. Brunet describes two early printed editions of alater French “redaction,” entitled, Le Débat du Vin et de l'Eau, of which the concluding lines are:—

“Je ne mangay ne chair ne pain

Au soupper, qi vouldra savoir mon nom,

Pour scavoir qui est l'escripvain

En ce couplet est tout en plain

S'on luy peut appercevoir.”
