In Australia (although the law is different from state to state), abortion is generally lawful only if it is done by a doctor who believes on reasonable grounds that the abortion should be done to prevent a serious risk to the woman's life or physical or mental health; and the abortion is reasonable in the circumstances. Nevertheless, thousands of abortions are performed each year, and many people believe that the legal requirements are sometimes loosely interpreted.
