page 9 note 1 I take αὐτοῖς to mean ‘sophists as a class’—‘den Sophisten überhaupt’. The fear is lest, by including these Socrates-like sophists among sophists in general, we attach to sophists in general the ‘too-great distinction’ of being philosophical.
