1 This phraseology (somewhat infelicitous, since a ‘voiced pharyngal’ is by definition a consonant) is presumably meant to contrast cases where it is actually pronounced with those in which it has been eliminated and replaced by vowel-length, e.g. /bāl < *ba'l).
