Calcium, magnesium and phosphorus in lactation and the dry period
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 02 September 2010
Extract
This paper will deal with the relevance of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium intakes to the variations which are seen in the plasma levels of these elements in dairy cows during lactation and the dry period.
Calcium
There is to my knowledge no report of any consistent effect of age, milk yield, season or level of calcium intake on the level of calcium in the blood of dairy cows. Changes do, however, take place in the blood level of calcium and it is the factors which influence the extent of such changes which I will discuss, particularly those relating to milk fever.
