Livestock rearing in Nepal is an integral component of the farming system. It contributes about 15% to the gross domestic product (GDP) and 25% to the agriculture GDP. Milk production is therefore an important activity of the livestock sector. The majority of rural households raise one or two dairy animals for milk production. At the farm level, more than 50% of the cash income generated from livestock comes from milk and milk products.
