If the definition of intensive is “that which is not extensive and includes housed animals and animals kept intensively on improved or irrigated pasture”, then the range of diseases affecting animals in the developing countries is a very wide one. Often the word “intensive” is associated with large concentrations of potentially productive animals kept in a restricted area and fed carefully calculated rations. The “feedlot” for cattle and sheep is an example of this, together with the large pig and poultry units.
