Notes

1. I am very grateful to Dr. D. M. Rogers for drawing my attention to these works, and to Fr. J. Molloy, the librarian of St. Edmund's College, for his help and co-operation.

2. See further, Recusant History, vol. 5, no. 2, 70 ff.Google Scholar

3. The second engraving of the Descriptiones is the only one completely independent of the Praesentis Ecclesiae. The others are influenced as follows (a and b = the upper and lower portion of the broadsheet woodcuts respectively): Descriptiones 1A by Praesentis Ecclesiae 1a; 1B and C by 2a; 1D and E by 2b; 3B and C by 4; 4A by 3b; 4E by 3a; 5 by 5 and 6.

4. Once again I am indebted to Fr. A. J. Loomie, S.J., this time for finding the letter and for checking my transcription and translation.
