Twenty-five years of international art library co-operation: the IFLA Art Libraries Section

The IFLA Art Libraries Section was formed 25 years ago to fill a clear need for international co-operation in this most international of professions. The Section has been responsible for the publication of a range of materials including basic tools such as the International directory of art libraries and An art librarian’s glossary. It is also an active participant in the conference programmes of IFLA, frequently offering additional satellite programmes or workshops for art librarians. Representation in the Section has covered many countries, although there are still gaps that need to be filled.

1. IFLA (the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) is the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users. Founded in Edinburgh in 1927 at an international conference, it celebrated its 75 th birthday at its conference in Glasgow, also in Scotland, in 2002. IFLA comprises eight divisions, the second of which, the Special Libraries Division, includes the Section of Art Libraries. While IFLA’s activities continue throughout the year, for most members the highlight is the opportunity for meeting colleagues at the annual conference, which is held each year in a different geographic region selected by the Governing Board. Forthcoming locations will be Durban (2007); Quebec (2008); Milan (2009); and in 2010 in South-East Asia, Australasia and Oceania (exact location yet to be decided).Google Scholar
