References

* Advertisements of this book say that it contains ‘360 pages, 224 full-colour plates, over 700 illustrations’. By ‘plates’ are meant illustrations, which run up to nine to a page; these ‘plates’ are also counted among the pages, as are the title sheets; and only 665 illustrations of all sorts (including the plates') are listed. This sort of publicity is misleading and, I conclude, deliberately so.
