A TALE OF TWO GABRIELS

Abstract

This paper examines the context of two nineteenth-century images of the thirteenth-century statue of the Angel Gabriel in the Chapter House of Westminster Abbey. One, by John Wykeham Archer, was previously unidentified; the other, by Elizabeth, Lady Palgrave, was misidentified.

Cet article examine le contexte de deux images du xixe siècle représentant la statue de l’ange Gabriel, située dans le chapitre de l’abbaye de Westminster. L’une, de John Wykeham Archer, n’avait pas été identifiée, l’autre, d’Elizabeth, Lady Palgrave, avait fait l’objet d’une identification erronée.

Zusammenfassung

Diese Abhandlung untersucht den Kontext zweier Abbildungen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert von der Statue des Erzengels Gabriel aus dem 13. Jahrhundert im Kapitelhaus von Westminster Abbey. Die eine, von John Wykeham Archer, war bisher nicht identifiziert worden, die andere, von Elizabeth, Lady Palgrave, war falsch identifiziert worden.
